VERSION 2.3 - AUGUST 31, 2015

Additions and revisions are as follows:

Glossary, Reset:
Adjusted wording to promote competitive throws.  Non-competitive throws now result in a deadball.

Glossary, Reach (new):
Added a definition for 'Reach' as it pertains to Resets.

Boundaries #3:
Added clarification that garments falling off a player and landing out of bounds do not result in the player being out.

Catch #4:
Players returning to play after a catch are no longer out upon purposely touching a ball before being reactivated;  that ball will now become dead.

Catch #14 (new):
Added clarification that articles of clothing falling off during play do not result in the player being out.

Technical #5:
Added clarification that a player will be out upon using clothing or assistive accessories to catch or otherwise interfere with a thrown active ball.

Attire & Safety #3:
Added language specifying that a player is not out as a result of clothing or accessories that have fallen off and subsequently been hit or crossed a court boundary.

Version 2.2 - January 7, 2013

These are the following updates to the Rules, Version 2.2:

  • General Rules #10: added language on how games are paused and restarted by referees
  • Consolidated all boundary rules under the Boundaries section
    • The Kamikaze rule now addresses both offensive and defensive plays
  • Hit Rule #5: verbiage added to address when a player is finally out
    • "A player is not out from a hit until the thrown ball touches another object or surface"
  • Catch Rule #1: Language has been added to clarify possession so that knees and other body parts can be used.
    • "A catch is when a player retains full control (see Glossary) of a ball released by an opponent. While possession does not require both feet on the ground, the player must land with both feet, or any other part of his body inbounds (see Technical #4)"
  • Created a Showdown section by moving some boundary rules; also added some showdown clarifications
    • "There is no 10 second dead ball count."
    • "If a victor can’t be determined, then a showdown rematch will occur."
  • Technical Rule #10: Kicking will be considered as an illegal throw
    • "A ball must be picked up in order for the release to be legal. Smacking, spiking, kicking, or scooping a ball are not allowed, and the hit won't count; however if caught by the opponent, the catch is legal."

Rules Release Notes

Version 2.1 - October 13, 2012

This release represents the first from the new IDA Rules Committee. Changes include:

  • The grammar has been corrected, and masculine pronouns will be used for simplicity.
  • Rule changes: 
    • Catch Rule #13: You cannot make a catch while holding a deadball.
    • Deadball Rule #12: If a player in possession of a dead ball makes a catch, that player will be considered hit and the catch void. The dead ball must still be turned over to the other team. (See Technical #14)
    •  Technical Rule #14: Catch Rule #7 supersedes Catch Rule #13 if the blocking ball becomes dead after the initial block.
